Our Services

Our Sawmill is centrally located to the New River Gorge area of West Virginia. Supplied by the rich abundance of this region’s forests, our products are made from local and small-scale timber harvesting.

We Offer both Green/Air-Dried lumber, as well as Kiln-Dried and Heat Treated Lumber.

  • We love woodworkers! That’s why we offer a variety premium local hardwoods and softwoods. Buy one board or one hundred- it is our goal to help you create beautiful projects from our local species.

  • We offer rough cut dimensional lumber for your various projects. We can source many types of hardwood and softwood to match your needs. Let us fill your order for exactly what you want.

  • Sometimes it can be very difficult to find large posts or beams for your major project such as a barn or timber frame structure. We can cut any number of species in lengths up to 25’ and as wide as 26”. Few mills are capable of handling these large timbers or do not want to take the time or effort to mill these specialty products. Let us help you with your project; we love a challenge.

  • We love the look of classic board and batten siding and the Lord has given us many great local species such as Hemlock, Yellow Poplar, and Eastern White Pine to use. Board and batten siding goes up great when it is green because it is more resistant to splitting and cracking than its dry counterparts. We offer numerous sizes and affordable prices on siding as well as furring strips and other thin boards.

  • Live edge pieces are very popular these days due to their organic and natural looks. We offer these slabs or boards green, air-dried, and kiln-dried. We have multiple options available at any given time for all kinds of uses!

  • Lumber for items such as crane mats, dunnage, shoring, and more can be difficult to source and shipping it from far away usually isn’t cost effective. We can get you the lumber that you need to keep your business running.

  • If you would like to turn your logs into lumber, we will mill your logs that are delivered to the mill and give you boards in return. This is a nice option if you have multiple logs, a way to load them, and some projects in mind that you would like to use lumber for. This can prove to be an advantage over portable mills sometimes because you do not have to pay for us to travel, set up, and tear down and you also do not need to deal with the waste/by-products. We also have a highly productive mill and have set-up our operation for efficient material handling.

    Requirements:

-Logs must be mostly free of debris and all limbs must be cut within 2” of the log.

-Logs must be under 36” and larger than 8” in diameter. They must be at least 6 feet in length and under 25 feet.

-Logs must be delivered to the mill site and be able to be unloaded with forks (preferable) or straps.

-There is a $30 fee if we hit metal-it destroys our $40 blades and we must throw them away.

-We charge by the hour on these logs which is beneficial to the customer. Any amount of time that you spend cleaning the logs, sourcing quality logs, prepping them for easy unload, etc, is time that we obviously do not charge you. Our fee is $100/hr and we have a 2 hour minimum to include unloading the logs. Depending on the species, clean and straight logs that arrive ready to be unloaded can yield up to 500 bd. ft. per hour, which works out to $0.20/bd ft. That is hard to beat.

Which Wood Is Better for you- Green/Air-dried or Kiln Dried Lumber?

  • “Green” lumber refers to lumber that is straight off the mill.

“Air-Dried” lumber is lumber that is drying or has dried to its “Equilibrium Moisture Content (EMC)”.

Since the outside air is generally more humid than conditioned inside air, lumber that is green or air-dried will be subject to shrinkage (mostly in width and thickness but very little in length) if used indoors. Lumber that has been completely air-dried to the local EMC should not shrink when used in an outdoor application. In many cases, such as utility lumber, post and beam construction, and board and batten siding, green lumber can provide advantages because it is less prone to splitting.

  • Kiln-Dried lumber refers to lumber that has been dried further than air-drying will allow. This is important when the wood is intended to be used in a conditioned space, such as a house. Air-drying in our region will only allow wood moisture content to drop to 12-15%, but kiln-drying will bring it to 6-10%, making it more stable indoors. After the wood has been kiln-dried, it tends to have very little movement as it is worked and used in applications.

Many times, using kiln-dried wood outdoors without being properly sealed will result in swelling- the wood is “re-hydrating”, or soaking back up atmospheric moisture that was removed during the kiln process.

Having Your Own Logs Milled

This customer needed some trailer decking and posts. In this video, I breakdown his cut list based on his project needs, the logs he provided, and the service cost of custom milling.
